RE: Historic Plaque Ceremony, June 3, 2016
TOCCOA, GA, JUNE 6, 2016 – The City of Toccoa installed
three (3) historic plaques at The Links at Lake Toccoa Camp Toccoa building on June
3, 2016 shortly before the D-Day Banquet.
The first plaque honors the history of the building
itself, which was originally located at Camp Toccoa before being moved at the
end of World War II. The second plaque honors the 48-star flag found at Camp Toccoa.
This flag flew through two world wars, eight presidents, and the emergence of
America as a world superpower. The final plaque honors a Camp Toccoa slate pool
table generously donated by the Elliott Caudell family. This slate pool table
served as entertainment for the brave soldiers before their eventual deployment
overseas.
These historic plaques celebrate the rich history of
the City of Toccoa and serve as a reminder that Toccoa played a vital role in
the defense of America during the Second War. During the 1940s, Camp Toccoa
served to house several divisions of the U.S. paratrooper program, including
most famously, the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
Main Street Toccoa implements an historic plaque program
yearly, in which it honors businesses, individuals, and items that have had an
impact upon the history of the City of Toccoa.
The Main Street Office is happy to answer any
questions regarding the plaque installation. Please contact Christian Hamilton
at 706.898.5777 for inquiries.
