RE: Presentation Grant Awarded

TOCCOA, GA – July 19, 2021 – Main Street Toccoa is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Presentation Grant to bring award-winning storyteller, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Bobby Horton to the Historic Ritz Theatre on May 6, 2022. This performance is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Georgia Council for the Arts.

Bobby Horton may best be known as the composer for sixteen of Ken Burns’ world-famous documentaries, including the recent Country Music that premiered at the Historic Ritz Theatre. Among other things, Bobby Horton is an historian and is widely recognized as one of the country’s leading authorities on Civil War-era music and has also produced musical scores for twenty-one films for the National Park Service.

On May 6, 2022, Mr. Horton will be performing his The Long Steel Rail in America, a storytelling and musical experience that explores the development of the American railroad system, one of the most important phenomena of the Industrial Revolution that brought forth profound social, economic, and political change to a country that, at the time, was only 50 years old. Through songs and stories, Bobby Horton will explore the themes and tunes that have become woven in American culture.

In addition to an evening performance, a free performance will also be provided for school-aged children.

“We are incredibly thankful to once again receive support from South Arts to bring dynamic and engaging content to the Historic Ritz Theatre,” said Toccoa Mayor Evan Hellenga. “These grant funds will be used to promote an entertaining and historical show, the like of which has not been seen before in Toccoa,” Hellenga added.
