Downtown Toccoa Sip-n-Stroll

 

TOCCOA, GA – August 25, 2020 – Main Street Toccoa, in coordination with the businesses of Downtown Toccoa, is pleased to announce that the inaugural Downtown Toccoa Sip-n-Stroll will be held on October 9 from 4pm to 7pm. Strollers can enjoy their favorite drink samples, deals, special promotions, and music and then attend a special concert at the Ritz Theatre with well-known bluegrass performer, Edgar Loudermilk at 7:00 p.m.

Participating businesses will provide a drink special sample (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), appetizers, special deals, giveaways, and more. Live music will be offered during the evening.

Main Street Toccoa staff will sell “punch cards” for $10 each the night of the event. The cards will include drinks for the evening and other related items. Visit a certain number of businesses and return the “punch card” to Main Street staff for a free prize or a free ticket to the Loudermilk concert.

This event is generously sponsored by the businesses of Historic Downtown Toccoa. Main Street Toccoa encourages the community to come out and #ShopSmall by visiting the local retail businesses downtown that contribute to the quality of life in the community.

RE: Ritz Presents: Last Summer Movie

Toccoa, GA, August 24, 2020, – Our summer movie series comes to end Saturday, August 29th with the award winning tale of abolitionist Harry Tubman in Harriet showing at 10am and 2pm at the Historic Ritz Theatre.

The movie tells the true-life story of Harriet Tubman, who after escaping slavery herself in 1849, led dangerous missions that helped free hundreds of slaves through the Underground Railroad. The film starring Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monae, and Leslie Odom Jr, won numerous awards and was critically acclaimed.  It is rated PG-13.

Because of social distancing guidelines each show time will be limited to the first 100 guests. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the theatre and face masks are encouraged. The theatre will be cleaned and disinfected between each showing.

RE: The Historic Ritz Theatre Welcomes Back Open Mic Monday

Toccoa, GA – August 24, 2020 – Are you a little bit country, a little bit rock n roll, or something in between?  If so, it’s time to showcase your talents at the Fourth Season of Open Mic Monday at The Historic Ritz Theatre. The competition will begin on Monday, September 21 at 7pm and continue on the third Monday of each month through December, culminating in a Winners’ Showcase in January.

Each month will feature a different musical category, beginning with Pop/Rock in September. The competitions will continue with Singer/Songwriter in October, Country in November, and a Wildcard category in December that can include any genre of music. The winners from each month will be brought back in January for a Winners’ Showcase.

Each month contestants can play up to two songs or for ten minutes. Contestants can play their own instruments or bring pre-recorded music on a jump drive. Winners are chosen from a panel of three judges and are awarded $50 plus a paid gig at the Ida Cox Music Series in the summer of 2021.

The monthly competitions are limited to 10 contestants each. Registration is free and competitors can sign up at the door, no later than 6:30 pm the day of show, on-line at tmayhugh@cityoftoccoa.com or by contacting Ritz Theatre General Manager Tami Mayhugh at 706-244-0039.

Toccoa, GA  August 24, 2020 – Let the Historic Ritz Theatre take you back to a time of peace, love, and rock-n-roll with the Vintage Vixens on Friday, September 25th at 7:00pm.

Inspired by 60's fashion and rockin' that retro sound, the all-female Vintage Vixens bring a mix of groovy, funky, hippie music to the stage. Their playlist includes covers of the biggest hits from Motown, The Mamas and the Papas, Turtles, Beatles, Rolling Stones, and The Drifters, sprinkled with some favorites from the 70’s as well.   It’s going to be a hit fest of good time, sing-along music.

The Quintet includes Amy on guitar/vocals, Janet on keyboard, Carol on drums, Vanessa on lead vocals, and founder Linda on bass.

The Vintage Vixens concert is a Night at the Ritz performance which is generously sponsored through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Georgia Council for the Arts.  Tickets for all shows may be purchased online at www.ritztheatretoccoa.com, www.eventbrite.com, or at the box office night of show.   Adults tickets are $10, children under 12 and students with an I.D. are $5. Doors open at 6:15. Due to social distancing guidelines seating is limited to the first one hundred and fifty guests.

Toccoa, GA – August 14, 2020 - At their regular August 14, 2020 Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Meeting, the City of Toccoa DDA voted to cancel the 2020 Harvest Festival in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulty that the City of Toccoa would face in keeping social distancing and safety measures in place for this 14,000-person two-day event. This would have been the 44th year of the Harvest Festival.

“We look forward to sharing our plans for other smaller events in the next months,” stated Sharon Crosby, Special Events Coordinator. “Our goal is to provide events that everyone will enjoy and that they will feel safe in participating.”

TOCCOA, GA, August 14, 2020 –Spend Saturday, August 22nd talking to the animals with Dr. Dolittle.  The 2020 release of Dolittle is showing at the Historic Ritz Theatre at 10:00am & 2:00pm.

Dr. John Dolittle lives in solitude behind the high walls of his lush manor in 19th-century England. His only companionship comes from an array of exotic animals that he speaks to on a daily basis. But when young Queen Victoria becomes gravely ill, the eccentric doctor and his furry friends embark on an epic adventure to a mythical island to find the cure. The movie stars Robert Downey Jr, Tom Holland, Rami Malek, and Selena Gomez. It is rated PG.

RE: Night at the Ritz Series

TOCCOA, GA, August 10, 2020- Two highly anticipated shows of the 2020-2021 Night at the Ritz Series are being postponed until the spring of 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Management for both Fleetwood Max and Jim Curry Presents the Music of John Denver, have postponed all remaining shows for the year and are looking ahead to the spring of 2021 to reschedule new dates.  Tickets already purchased will be honored for the new dates. Refunds are also available. The new show times will be announced as soon as they become available.

Max the terrier encounters canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a scary turkey when he visits the countryside. Luckily for Max, he soon catches a break when he meets Rooster, a gruff farm dog who tries to cure the lovable pooch of his neuroses. The movie is rated PG and features the voices of Kevin Hart, Patton Oswalt, Lake Bell, Eric Stonestreet, and Harrison Ford.

TOCCOA, GA, July 20, 2020, – If you “just can’t wait to be king,” join Simba on his royal quest in the Lion King, Saturday, August 8th at 10:00am & 2:00pm at the Historic Ritz Theatre.

Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny on the plains of Africa. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub's arrival. Scar, Mufasa's brother -- and former heir to the throne -- has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is soon ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba's exile. Now, with help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba must figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. This movie features the voices of James Aerl Jones, Seth Rogan, and Billy Eichner. It is rated PG with a run time of 1hr 58min.
