GPB to Screen "Country Music" during Ida Cox Music Series

GPB is pleased to partner with the City of Toccoa for a free preview screening of Ken Burns’ Country Music documentary and a concert by the Edgar Loudermilk Band featuring Jeff Autry on July 20, 2019 as part of the annual Ida Cox Music Series. Guests will enjoy selected footage of the highly-anticipated 16 hour documentary film followed by a live performance by bluegrass artist Edgar Loudermilk in Toccoa’s beautiful Historic Ritz Theatre.

The evening will begin at 7:00 pm outside of the historic Ritz Theatre with three local musicians performing. At 8:00, the documentary will begin inside the theatre, followed by a performance by Edgar Loudermilk featuring Jeff Autry and their band.

The eight-part documentary, “Country Music” tells the story of the rise and evolution of this uniquely American art form which has deep roots in ballads, hymns, and the blues. Through music, the American story is told of the lives lived throughout areas of the U.S. The documentary shares the stories of the people who lived, wrote and performed the songs. Over 80 people were interviewed for the production, each representing a different era or aspect of the story. “Country Music” will premiere on PBS, Sunday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 18, and will air again Sunday, September 22 through Wednesday, September 25 from 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm.

Edgar Loudermilk, well-known throughout the world of bluegrass for his songwriting as well as his singing, will perform at 8:40. Each year, Loudermilk and Jeff Autry travel around the US and Canada and have received numerous awards for their work. Currently, Loudermilk resides in Eastanollee, Georgia.

The Ida Cox Music Series is a free concert series that takes place every Saturday in June, July, and August in Historic Downtown Toccoa. Featuring many different genres of music, the Ida Cox Music Series is a community event series named after legendary Blues artist and Toccoa native, Ida Cox.  The event features live entertainment, food from local restaurants and food trucks, beer, wine, and more. The opening act begins at 7pm, and the main act performs from 8pm - 10pm. The Ida Cox Music Series is generously sponsored by the City of Toccoa and Main Street Toccoa.

Summer Movies Begins with Mary Poppins Returns

TOCCOA, GA, May 24, 2019 – Main Street Toccoa is happy to announce the first showing of the Summer movie series, Mary Poppins Returns, on Thursday, June 6th at 10:00am and 7:00pm. The Summer Movies at the Ritz will take place on Thursdays this June and July at the Historic Ritz Theatre in Downtown Toccoa. Showtimes are at 10:00am and 7:00pm. Tickets and concessions are only $1.

The remaining screenings will take place on June 13th with Ralph Breaks the Internet; June 20th with Lego Movie 2; June 27th with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; July 5th with First Man (note: this is a Friday); July 11th with BumbleBee; July 18th with The Incredibles 2; and conclude on July 25th with Creed II.

Huntertones Are Coming to The Historic Ritz Theatre!

Toccoa, GA – May 10, 2019 – Main Street Toccoa and The Ritz Theatre are very pleased to welcome the Huntertones on Thursday, May 16 th at 7 pm, as part of its Night at the Ritz series.

Huntertones brings people together around the globe with fun, imaginative and fearless music. Their
high energy, horn-driven sound features genre-bending composition and unconventional covers. Every show is a social experience celebrating the joy of music.

Huntertones formed in Columbus, Ohio and is now based in Brooklyn, NY. They’ve performed in over 20 countries worldwide and continue to tour the US and abroad. Their latest release, Passport, is a collection of songs inspired by their experiences sharing music with people from all over the world.

Night at the Ritz, a regular event series at the Historic Ritz Theatre, is funded, in part, by generous grants received from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Georgia Council for the Arts, and the Fox Theatre Institute. Toast of Toccoa Scheduled for May 4, 2019

Toccoa, GA, April 29, 2019 – Toccoa’s second largest event is coming on May 4 in downtown Toccoa from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm. This will be the third year that the city has sponsored the Toast of Toccoa. It is quickly becoming a popular event in northeast Georgia.

This spring event features an art show, craft beer tasting, wine tasting, entertainment, food vendors, and a classic car cruise-in.

Once again this year, the Currahee Artists Guild and other regional arts organizations who will display their artwork in separate booths set up throughout the downtown area. Visitors will be able to talk one-on-one with the individual artist about their particular work and will be able to purchase selected works of art. The children’s art work will be shown in the breezeway in the center of Doyle St. Winners of the show will be announced at 5:00 p.m.

Food vendors are a popular part of the event. This year there will be two food trucks, Carter’s Smoke House and Mike’s On the Go. The popular, Just Right Catering, will be located in front of their downtown storefront and Asia House will be located in the Food Court. Downtown restaurants are available for lunch or dinner as well as Victoria’s Sweet Treats.

Eight different styles of craft beer and cider, from breweries like Creature Comfort, Dalton Brewing, Mercier Orchards and more will be available from a beer truck will be located at the corner of Doyle Street and Pond Street.

Area wineries will be located on Doyle Street from Sage Street to Pond Street and will offer wine tastings. Bottles of wine can be purchased at the different wine booths.

Individual souvenir 16 ounce beer glasses and 8.5 ounce wine glasses will be on sale for $4 each OR $10 each which will include four separate pour tickets (which are valued at $2 each). Sample beer pours will be 4 ounces each while wine tasting pours are 2 ounces each and will be handled by the individual wineries. The individual tasting tickets are $2 each. Each ticket would be good for a 2 ounce wine pour or 4 ounce beer pour.

Tickets can be purchased at the corner of Doyle Street and Sage Street. ID’s will be checked at the ticket booth before tickets can be purchased for the beer and wine. Beer and wine open containers will not be allowed outside of the festival area.

The entertainment stage will be located at the intersection of Sage Street and Doyle Street. Radford Windham and Step Back Cadillac, a popular band which performed at the Ida Cox Music Series in 2018, will be onstage from 12 – 3 pm. The Mobtones, an up and coming local band, will be on stage from 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Another popular event at Toast of Toccoa is the Classic Car and Specialty Cruise-In, featuring dozens of restored vintage and specialty automobiles. It will be held on Doyle Street between Pond and Hill Streets. Everyone is invited to participate. There will be plaques given for the Top Five. Streets will close at midnight on Friday night and open up again on Saturday at 6:00 pm. Car owners are asked to park in the parking lots on Foreacre Street beginning Friday night.
