Fireworks reading set for Thursday, Feb 11

A love story that takes place in Toccoa is the subject of a new book being released, and the community is invited to meet the author and listen to excerpts from the book.

Author Jeffrey Stepakoff will be reading from his upcoming fictional novel, Fireworks Over Toccoa in the Mitchell Allen Room of the Historic Train Depot in downtown Toccoa on Thursday, February 11 at 7 p.m.

Doors to the meeting room will open at 6:30 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure a seat. People who want to come earlier are permitted to purchase a ticket to tour the Currahee Military Museum and enter the meeting room through the museum.

Those who pre-order books at the event will be given a bookplate which will be signed by Stepakoff. There will also be a drawing for a signed pre-release copy of Fireworks Over Toccoa at the event.

The book is set for Hardback North American release by St. Martin's Press on March 30, and events are already being planned to celebrate this event in historic downtown Toccoa.

The book is also available as an audio edition, an eBook, and in a Large Print edition, and it’s a selection of The Doubleday Book Club, The Rhapsody Book Club, The Literary Guild, The Doubleday Large Print Club, and France Loisirs, The French Book Club. Translated editions of Fireworks will also be released this year in numerous foreign markets, including, France, Germany, Italy.



Stepakoff has written for fourteen different series including The Wonder Years, Sisters, Major Dad, Beauty & The Beast, Simon & Simon, and Dawson’s Creek where he was Co-Executive Producer. He currently lives in Atlanta, where he teaches dramatic writing at Kennesaw State University. TFC freshmen work to improve Toccoa's Main Street

New students at Toccoa Fall College are learning about Main Street Toccoa by volunteering their time to help make downtown a better place.

On Monday, August 17, some 25 volunteers from TFC spent two hours picking up trash and removing Kudzu from the Stephens County Market Building fence. They collected 12 bags of trash, which will be disposed of by the Toccoa Public Works Department.

Bags, vests, and other materials required for the cleanup were provided by Keep Toccoa Stephens County Beautiful (KTSCB).

Students cleaned up portions of Broad Street and Falls Road (as they run through the downtown district). They also picked up trash along the railroadtracks, from Broad to Pond Streets as well as around the vacant Alexander Apartments building.

This effort is day one in a three day campaign to introduce incoming TFC students to the Main Street district of Toccoa. The volunteers are led by TFC Senior Jeremiah Young who feels that TFC students can learn a great deal about Toccoa by volunteering their time and energy to community projects.

On Tuesday, a different group from TFC will be doing some landscaping work around the downtown area and Broad Street underpass, and on Wednesday they'll be working in the Currahee Military Museum and with Toccoa's special events coordinator.

NE GA Arts Tour Comes to Toccoa

The 2009 self-guided Arts Tour through the scenic mountains of Northeast Georgia includes beautiful Toccoa-Stephens County. The Tour allows visitors to take in local artists, attractions, restaurants, workshops and music. There are over thirty six art related businesses and attractions participating in the fifth annual tour this year in Stephens, Habersham, Rabun and White counties.

Start your tour in historic downtown Toccoa. Come to the renovated train depot, home to the Welcome Center, the Chamber of Commerce and the Historical Society. Pick up a map of the sights of Toccoa-Stephens County and those of the surrounding counties. There will be a special bronze sculpting display at the Welcome Center from Bruce Everly to kick off the tour.

Call the Historical Society ahead of time at (706)282-5055 and reserve a guided tour through the famous Currahee Military Museum. See the incredible collection of WWII military memorabilia as well as a series of bronze sculpture busts, including General Dwight D. Eisenhower done by local, classical sculptor Bruce Everly.

From there you can take stroll to downtown Toccoa where the three Art Zone locations can be found:

Dream Giver’s Art Gallery is “the most diverse, inviting and customer friendly art gallery that you could imagine.” The Dream Givers Art Gallery offers a relaxed, comfortable setting with an extremely wide variety of art, featuring the work of only local artists. You won’t want to miss this unique, one a kind art gallery with over 90 local artist’s work. Live artist demonstrations include: sterling silver jewelry design, hand cut gemstone jewelry design, fabric jewelry bags design, acrylic painting, oil painting, jewelry making and photography on stretched canvas. Hours for the demonstrations are Friday 1:00-5:00pm, Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm and Sunday 1:00-5:00pm.

Hall Manor Mercantile features locally handmade furniture, art, antiques and home décor. Both adult and children’s art classes are offered in various mediums and are fortunate to have fifteen local artists sharing their creative talents year-round. Live artist demonstrations include: fiber arts, painting and gourd art. Hours for the demonstrations are Friday 10:00am-6:00pm, Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm and Sunday 1:00-5:00pm.

The Studio and Frame Shop is a working studio offering classes for adults and children to learn and explore art. It is the gallery for the Currahee Artists’ Guild. Live artist demonstrations include: wire sculpting, drawing, watercolor, pottery, acrylic painting, jewelry making, wood carving and basketry. Hours for the demonstrations are Friday 1:00-5:00pm, Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm and Sunday 1:00-5:00pm.

Also located in downtown are four of the featured Dining locations: “Come as you are” and experience the casual gourmet experience of The Cornerstone Restaurant. Its full menu of Eclectic Americana favorites is sure to suit your taste buds and fill your stomach. Another lunchtime favorite is The Rebel Café, a diner-style restaurant that features breakfast all day and some of the best burgers in town.

Ground Breaking Ceremony for Currahee Military Museum Expansion Project

On May 27 at 11 a.m. the Stephens County Historical Society celebrated the beginning of the expansion project of the Currahee Military Museum. The project, funded with SPLOST dollars, will enable the museum to host larger conferences and meetings. It will also enable the museum to expand their displays. The Currahee Military Museum is located at the Train Depot in Historic Downtown Toccoa.
