Toccoa, Georgia, August 1, 2017- The City of Toccoa is proud to announce that Commissioner Terry Carter has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 American Public Works Association (APWA)- Georgia Chapter Elected Official of the Year Award. This coveted award puts Commissioner Carter in a very elite group of winners.

Commissioner Carter received the award at the annual APWA-Georgia Chapter Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, July 26th at the historic Jekyll Island Club in Jekyll Island, GA. In his role in public service, Commissioner Carter has overseen and played an instrumental role in countless city projects, including construction bids for a new city pool and pool building, the streetscape project, and renovations at Toccoa’s Historic Ritz Theatre. Commissioner Carter’s spearheading of the pool project also won the APWA-Georgia Chapter Award for Small Cities/Rural Communities previously. 

As Mayor of Toccoa, Commissioner Carter secured LWCF funding for a grant of $100,000 for upgrades at Henderson Falls Park. Commissioner Carter’s work at Lake Toccoa must also be mentioned, as with his aid, the City of Toccoa’s clubhouse also won an APWA-Georgia Chapter Award for Small Cities/Rural Communities. Most recently, Commissioner Carter helped to secure another LWCF grant for $163,000 to improve recreational opportunities at the Lake. Commissioner Carter has proven to be absolutely crucial to the success, survival, and longevity of the City of Toccoa. His achievements serve to further the success and long-term viability of the public works implemented in the city. The City of Toccoa is honored at the receiving of this prestigious award.
The APWA was chartered in the United States in 1937 to make a difference both on an individual and professional level. With a worldwide membership of over 28,500, APWA serves as an effective voice of public works throughout North America and across the world.
