Milkshake in Concert

Toccoa will once again be welcoming one of her favorite performers on February 11 at 7:00 pm at the Schaefer Center. Main Street Toccoa will be hosting Milkshake Mayfield in concert for an Evening of Jazz. Having been born and raised in Toccoa, Milkshake enjoys coming “home again” and the reception he and his wife Christine get from his many friends and family.

It is no wonder that the late legendary radio host, “Tippy” Calloway, befittingly announced Milkshake as trumpeter extraordinaire.  His music presentation mirrors the legacy of jazz greats.  He has circled the world, gracing national and international stages with some of the greatest ‘who’s who’ among contemporary jazz giants - Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, mentor Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Cab Calloway, Freddie Hubbard, and many others.  His astounding jazz portfolio includes performances/opening acts with the SOS band; Bobby Byrd & the JBs; Michael Franks; Alex Bugnon; Kevin Eubanks; Maysa (formerly of Incognito); Angie Stone concerts…..The melodic sounds of Milkshake have been featured in the Gospel musical “The Glory Road”; trumpet tribute to the legendary Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong at UNCF Benefit’s Salute to  Apollo; the Trumpet Awards; Atlanta Montreux International Jazz Festival; Nice France’s La Grande Parade de Jazz; Montreux Switzerland Jazz Festival; New York’s Carnegie Hall……

In 1980, Milkshake formed the Milkshake Quintet (MSQ), known for its distinctively smooth and silky contemporary and straight ahead jazz, with a taste of bebop and funk.  His debut CD entitled “In My Time” was released in 2002, and he is currently working on his Gospel/Jazz and holiday CDs, that will feature the soulfully soothing vocals of his lovely and talented wife, Christine (Tine), MSQ’s featured vocalist.  He actively mentors to youth and aspiring young musicians via WCLK’s Jazz 91.9 “Jazz In the School” outreach program, and “Live B4U Die Summit”, sponsored by Community Council of Metro Atlanta, Inc. Atlanta, Ga.  In 2008, he was the featured jazz artist on WAGA Fox 5 Wednesday’s Child adoption hotline, courtesy of WCLK radio station, Atlanta, Ga.  In 2008, he performed aboard the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ (RCCL) Navigator of the Seas in the Western Mediterranean, and became the first trumpeter to perform at the first communion service conducted at the tomb of John the Apostle in Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey.  In 2010, he was invited to perform on the World’s largest ship, the RCCL’s Oasis of the Seas; and in 2012 , he performed on RCCL’s Liberty of the Seas.  In 2011, he also performed a tribute in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King at the MLK Commemorative Service, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA.

As anyone can tell, Milkshake can be found mostly anywhere in the World where smooth jazz is heard on local, national and international stages across the oceans and seas.  You can find Milkshake & MSQ at any number of local jazz and gospel venues: Michons; Atlanta’s Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint; Wednesday WindDown; Hammonds House and Fernbank Museums; CloseUp2 Lounge; Lithonia, Mablehouse and WolfCreek Amphitheatres; Georgia Aquarium; Columbus Jazz Society; and countless more……..

Milkshake holds a BA degree in Music from Clark College (now Clark-Atlanta University), where he was lead trumpeter in Clark’s jazz orchestra, Morehouse College Big Band, and the Atlanta Band.
