TOCCOA, GA, July 25, 2016 – Main Street Toccoa is thrilled to announce that the final film for its Summer Movies at the Schaefer Center will be Universal’s Minions. This film, a spinoff from the Despicable Me franchise, follows a group of these exuberant evildoers as they look for a new supervillain to serve. This film is fun for the entire family.

The Summer Movies at the Schaefer Center event series showcases films from a variety of genres. This summer, Main Street Toccoa showed such diverse films as The Peanuts Movie, Ant-Man, Jurassic World, and Bridge of Spies. Summer Movies at the Schaefer Center takes place on Thursdays. Showings are at 10 A.M. and 7 P.M. All tickets are $1.00, and all concessions are $1.00.

Main Street Toccoa invites you to come out for this Summer’s final film, and we hope to see you again at “Puttin’ on the Ritz” on August 25 for Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out. TOCCOA, GA, July 25. 2016- Main Street Toccoa is pleased to announce that the leading act for the final week of the 2016 Ida Cox Music Series is Dyn-O-Mite, based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Dyn-O-Mite describes their music as “organ-driven funky tunes,” predominately focusing on the 1960s and 1970s. They perform all across Georgia and always enjoy packed dance floors.

The Ida Cox Music Series was created to honor famous Toccoan Blues musician, Ida Cox. Every Summer in June and July, come down to Doyle Street for free music and fellowship. Don’t forget to bring a lawn chair.

TOCCOA, GA, July 18. 2016- Main Street Toccoa is excited to announce that the eighth week of the 2016 Ida Cox Music Series will feature Clay Leverett and Breathing Kansas. Clay Leverett, a Toccoa local, is a featured Ida Cox artist and is known for his energetic country music and rock influences, having performed with Travis Tritt, Loretta Lynn, and a tribute event to the late George Jones. 

Breathing Kansas is based here in Toccoa and is made up of talented rockers Logan Payne, Tyler Smith, and Daniel Leverett, Clay’s younger brother.

The Ida Cox Music series was designed to honor famous Toccoan blues singer, Ida Cox. Each week in June and July, artists will perform for free in Downtown Toccoa. Come to Doyle Street beginning at 7 P.M. for a great show, and don’t forget to bring a lawn chair.

RE: Puttin’ on the Ritz

TOCCOA, GA, July 18, 2016 – Main Street Toccoa is happy to officially announce the date and time for its unveiling of the Ritz Theatre marquee at the Schaefer Center. On August 25^th, come down to the Schaefer Center on Doyle Street at 5:30 P.M. for refreshments, live music, and a ceremony, which will conclude with the official unveiling of the marquee.

At 6:15 P.M., we will be recreating the iconic picture of the Ritz Theatre seen below. Please invite any friends and family that may have been a part of the original photograph to come out for the recreation of the picture. All attendees are invited to be a part of this photograph. Main Street Toccoa will also be showing a short clip from Once Upon a Horse, as seen on the marquee in the historic photograph. At 7 P.M., the marquee installation will be celebrated with a free movie for all, Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out, co-sponsored by the Toccoa-Stephens County Public Library.

 The construction of the marquee is due partly to a grant from the Fox Theater Institute in Atlanta. The installation of this historically-inspired marquee will help serve to make the Ritz Theatre a focal point in Downtown Toccoa for the foreseeable future.

The Schaefer Center has been a staple in Downtown Toccoa for many years. After its tenure as the Ritz Theater in the mid-1900s, the Schaefer Center was purchased and renamed by Mrs. Orville Schaefer. Soon after, it was bought by the Currahee Arts Council and became a community theater and performing arts venue. In 1999, the Currahee Arts Council installed a brick veneer over the front façade, covering the original iconic Art Deco design. The City bought the Schaefer Center from the Currahee Arts Council in 2014 and began renovations to restore the Schaefer Center. The first renovations began in 2012 through a collaboration between the City of Toccoa and the Currahee Arts Council, and were both interior and exterior, culminating with the restoration of the original front façade. The reinstallation of the Ritz Theatre marquee is just the next step in restoration of the historic Schaefer Center.
